Role: UX Writer & Content Designer (II)

About the Role
This is a UX Writer and Content Designer position based in New York, The role is within the Material Design team, which is responsible for creating the creative direction and design system for all of client's and its third-party customers. The hire would be a more junior writer on the team and reports to Lori, the manager of writing and visual design. The work model is hybrid, requiring on-site presence Tuesday through Thursday. The core priority is maintaining detailed quality and structural integrity of the final guidance, not rapid documentation output.



Job Responsibilities

• Create and document guidance for the Material Design system, which is used by Google and third-party customers.
• Drive clarity across the organization, resolving discrepancies between what engineers are building and what UX designers are saying.
• Update content based on feedback and follow the style guide.
• Collaborate closely with various stakeholders, including visual design, motion design, interaction design, product, engineering, and program management.
• Prepare guidance for publishing on internal documentation (Go Jam 3 using Carbon CMS) and external sites (Material.io using Kintaro CMS).
• Be able to speak about UI and write product copy for "Do and Don't" examples, as well as captions and alt text for the guidelines site.
• Focus on large projects one at a time, such as devices and form factors (watches, wearables, and XR) and high-priority items like AI Components and IOS guidelines.

Mandatory Skills

• Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in product writing. Must be able to hit the ground running with familiarity in how an interface is designed and how all components fit together. Prior experience as a product writer at a tech company is ideal due to the steep learning curve otherwise.
• Tools: Must be completely comfortable using Figma, as all content lives there. Must be able to use Buganizer for internal issue tracking.
• Writing & Concepts: Strong, clear writing skills and the ability to follow a style guide. Need to understand design systems, technology, and the concepts of visual and motion design to communicate intelligibly about them.

Nice to Have Skills

• Experience: Previous experience writing guidelines or documenting design systems is "incredible". Experience in the consumer space (e.g., working on a retail app, or with companies like Meta/Instagram) is preferred over enterprise or non-UI/UX work. Technical writing experience with UX design space experience is considered a close fit.
• Soft Skills: Must be organized, proactive, communicative, and easy to work with due to the high level of collaboration required.
• Tools: Ability to use AI to improve workflow, such as prompting Gemini or using the internal notebook LLM to align content with style guides.
