Job Title: GIS Governance Coordinator

Duration (Contract): 11 Months

Client Location: Richmond, VA

Job Description:

As a GIS Governance Coordinator, you will be responsible for establishing, enhancing, and managing enterprise GIS governance programs that promote consistent, accurate, and high-quality geospatial data management across the organization. You will lead governance initiatives related to GIS inventory management, data lifecycle governance, workforce standards, and strategic improvement efforts. This role requires strong collaboration with business and technical stakeholders to drive governance adoption, improve GIS processes, and support enterprise-wide geospatial strategies and data management objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish, maintain, and improve enterprise GIS governance frameworks, standards, and practices.
  • Lead initiatives focused on GIS inventory management, governance compliance, and operational consistency.
  • Develop and maintain governance documentation, policies, procedures, standards, and supporting materials.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure consistent implementation of GIS governance practices.
  • Support enterprise GIS strategic planning initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and maintain GIS data lifecycle management processes and governance controls.
  • Promote data stewardship, data quality, metadata management, and governance best practices throughout the organization.
  • Facilitate stakeholder meetings, governance workgroups, and cross-department collaboration efforts.
  • Create reports, presentations, dashboards, and briefing materials for leadership and governance committees.
  • Monitor governance activities and recommend process improvements to enhance data reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Support governance-related projects and special initiatives involving geospatial data and enterprise systems.
  • Assist in defining GIS workforce roles, responsibilities, competencies, and skills frameworks.
  • Analyze existing GIS processes and recommend improvements to support business objectives and governance standards.
  • Ensure alignment between GIS governance initiatives and broader enterprise data management strategies.
  • Track governance metrics, compliance activities, and program outcomes to support decision-making.

Required Skills, Experiences, Education, and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of GIS principles, geospatial data management, and enterprise GIS environments.
  • Experience working with GIS technologies including Esri platforms, enterprise geodatabases, and spatial data services.
  • Understanding of data governance concepts including data stewardship, metadata management, data quality, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience developing, implementing, or supporting governance programs and operational standards.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and coordinate multiple stakeholders across functional areas.
  • Strong analytical, research, process improvement, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience documenting workflows, procedures, governance standards, and business processes.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, workshops, and collaborative sessions with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience preparing executive reports, presentations, and governance-related documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience supporting enterprise data management, GIS operations, or related technology initiatives.
  • Ability to build consensus and promote adoption of governance practices across teams.
  • Experience with geospatial governance or enterprise data governance programs preferred.
  • Familiarity with transportation-related data domains preferred.
  • Experience developing competency models, workforce frameworks, or technical role standards preferred.
  • Experience supporting enterprise GIS strategy and organizational transformation initiatives preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field preferred.

The hourly range for roles of this nature are $50.00 to $80.00/hr. Rates are heavily dependent on skills, experience, location, and industry.
